Dr. Prasher graduated with his MBBS from the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune in 1972—one of India’s most elite medical institutions known for producing exceptional physicians. He completed his MD in Medicine from AFMC, Pune in 1978, gaining comprehensive training in internal medicine and developing strong clinical acumen in managing diverse medical conditions. His quest for super-specialization in kidney diseases led him to complete his DM in Nephrology from the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh in 1987—India’s apex medical institute and one of the country’s premier nephrology training centers—where he received extensive hands-on training in all aspects of nephrology, dialysis, kidney transplantation, and renal replacement therapy.
Dr. Prasher has had a distinguished career serving as Consultant in Nephrology at various super-specialty hospitals of the Armed Forces, where he specialized in internal medicine and nephrology, providing care to service personnel and their families across different locations. His military medical service reflects his commitment to excellence, discipline, and compassionate patient care under challenging circumstances.
After retirement from the Armed Forces, Dr. Prasher worked as Consultant in Nephrology at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, where he was instrumental in starting the Dialysis Unit and establishing the Nephrology Department, demonstrating his leadership and pioneering spirit in building nephrology services from the ground up. His expertise in setting up dialysis facilities has been crucial in providing life-saving renal replacement therapy to patients with kidney failure.
Dr. Prasher has also been actively associated with medical education, teaching MBBS and MD (Medicine) students at Gian Sagar Medical College and MM Institute of Medical Sciences, Mullana. His academic contributions include training the next generation of physicians and nephrologists, sharing his vast clinical experience and knowledge. He has been responsible for setting up dialysis units in both these institutions, ensuring that these medical colleges have state-of-the-art facilities for renal care and training.
Presently, as Senior Consultant in Nephrology at Healing Hospital, Chandigarh, Dr. Prasher continues to provide expert care for patients with kidney diseases, combining his decades of experience with evidence-based nephrology practice.
Dr. Prasher specializes in the complete spectrum of nephrological conditions including chronic kidney disease (CKD management across all stages, slowing disease progression, managing complications, preparation for renal replacement therapy), diabetic kidney disease (diabetic nephropathy management, proteinuria control, blood sugar and blood pressure optimization), hypertension (blood pressure management, hypertensive kidney disease, resistant hypertension, secondary hypertension evaluation), nephrotic syndrome (management of proteinuria, edema control, complications of nephrotic syndrome, underlying cause evaluation), urinary tract infections (recurrent UTIs, complicated UTIs, pyelonephritis, prevention strategies), acute kidney injury (AKI management, identifying and treating reversible causes, preventing progression to chronic kidney disease), kidney transplant care (pre-transplant evaluation, post-transplant management, immunosuppression monitoring, transplant complications), hemodialysis (in-center hemodialysis, vascular access management, dialysis prescription optimization, managing dialysis complications), and peritoneal dialysis (CAPD – Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis, APD – Automated Peritoneal Dialysis, catheter care, peritonitis management).
His expertise extends to comprehensive management of electrolyte disorders (sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus imbalances), acid-base disorders, mineral bone disease in CKD, anemia of CKD, cardiovascular complications of kidney disease, and nutrition counseling for kidney patients. He is proficient in kidney biopsy interpretation, dialysis access procedures, and coordination of multidisciplinary care for complex renal patients.
Dr. Prasher is a member of prestigious national organizations including Association of Physicians of India (API) and Indian Society of Nephrology (ISN)—the premier organization for nephrologists in India—actively participating in continuing medical education and staying updated with advances in nephrology and renal replacement therapy.
His four-and-a-half decades of experience encompass the evolution of nephrology from its early days to modern advanced renal care, including the development of dialysis technologies, kidney transplantation advances, and contemporary approaches to chronic kidney disease management. His pioneering work in establishing multiple dialysis units has provided life-saving treatment to countless patients with kidney failure.
According to Dr. Prasher, “Nephrology is about preserving kidney function, managing kidney failure with compassion, and providing hope through dialysis and transplantation. Every patient with kidney disease deserves comprehensive care that addresses not just their kidney but their overall health and quality of life.” He is medically very sound and believes in ethical practice with evidence-based treatment for his patients. He makes sure that his patients and families are fully aware of their kidney condition, disease progression, treatment options including conservative management, dialysis, and transplantation, and preventive strategies, and goes the extra mile in educating them about kidney health, dietary modifications, medication adherence, and lifestyle changes from early kidney disease management to advanced renal replacement therapy, ensuring informed decision-making at every step.
